Soy replaces corn in Ukrainian fields

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, this year, Ukrainian farmers plan to reduce corn crops by 130,000 hectares. This decision of farmers was influenced by last year's lack of prices and problems with harvesting.

This is stated in the special project "Sowing 2024: we plan not to make profits, but to survive on the market" on Kurkul.com.

So, what are farmers planning to replace corn with?

Oleksandr Myhlovets, director of the Department of Agricultural Technologies of Ukravit, noted that the trend towards an increase in soybean acreage is noticeable from communication with farms. In many cases, soybeans are replacing corn.

"We have seen upward trends in soybean acreage for several seasons in a row. It is difficult to predict exactly how much the area will grow this year. We are communicating with partners, both small farms and large agricultural holdings — all of them, where there is a soybean belt, will increase the area under soybeans. Obviously, this can affect the domestic market. In addition, it is difficult to predict how other markets will behave, because the price in Ukraine depends on world prices," he noted.

Yelyzaveta Malyshko, head of the UkrAgroConsult agricultural markets and processing products division, noted that peas could be a good alternative for Ukrainian farmers. But this requires successful negotiations with China.

"Look at Russia, which has already agreed to export its peas to China. Production there is currently breaking records. Therefore, if the negotiations are positive, the area under peas will grow in our country as well," she said.
