In Kirovohrad Oblast, they plan to sow record areas of sunflower

In 2024, Kirovohrad region farmers plan to set a record for sunflower sowing — 661,000 hectares. Since the independence of Ukraine, this is a record amount of space. Valeriya Furmanova, head of the regional department of agro-industrial development, told about it.

Before that, the largest crops in the region were 530-570 thousand hectares.

As the head of the department noted, the increase in crops was influenced by the fact that sunflower now has a domestic market and is more profitable than grains and corn.

"Sunflower now has a price. It is actively processed into sunflower oil and meal, it can be handed over to processing enterprises of the region and Ukraine, it is exported and sold on the domestic market. The profitability of sunflower last year was 70%," Valeriia Furmanova explained.

She also noted that some farms in the region have already started sowing sunflower seeds.

"A big plus is that sunflowers can be delivered right here to processing plants. Today, we have 2.2 million tons of sunflower processing capacity, and the annual production is one and a half million tons," explained the head of the department.

In general, in 2024, it is planned to sow 387.6 thousand hectares of spring grain crops in the region, the majority of which will be corn.
