The price of buckwheat fell more than 7 times - a farmer

Last year, buckwheat became an unprofitable crop for many farmers — its purchase price dropped to UAH 6,000/ton. For comparison, in 2022 it was purchased at a price of UAH 45,000/t.

Ihor Lazorenko, head of SFG "Vesna" from Sumy Oblast, told about it, writes Zemliak.com

"Don't you want the purchase price for buckwheat for 6 thousand? In 2023, this culture was unprofitable. At the expense of technology, not everything is clear either, it is not as easy to collect it as wheat or corn," the farmer shared.

According to him, in the spring of 2022, they offered UAH 45,000 for a ton of buckwheat. However, last year they began to sow it en masse... This collapsed the market. It was the same with mustard.

Ihor Lazorenko added that in 2024, many farmers of the Sumy Oblast have revised their crop rotations: they plan to sow less corn, but more soybeans.

"I think that powerful, stable farms will work according to the established multi-year crop rotation. Yes, corn has become less profitable than before, but price jumps have always been on the grain market," noted Ihor Lazorenko.

Earlier, Oleksiy Dzyuba, head of FG "Ozon" from Sumy Oblast, said that in their farm before the war, all crops were profitable, it was especially attractive to grow sunflowers and buckwheat. However, they have now become unprofitable.

Currently, according to him, oats bring good profitability, as their price is about 6.5 thousand hryvnias/t, while costs are minimal.

By the way, the buckwheat harvest in Ukraine in 2023 is 207.5 thousand tons. In 2022, 148 thousand tons of it was harvested.
