Ukraine plans to increase the area sown under oil and sugar beets

This year, an increase in the area sown under oil and sugar beets is predicted. Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, stated this on the broadcast of the Yedyny Novyny marathon.

At the same time, the area of grain and corn cultivation will partially decrease. In general, in terms of gross production and the potential value of the future harvest, Ukraine will achieve similar indicators compared to 2022.

"The planted areas for sunflower, soy and rape will be increased by 10-15%. The good news is that sugar beet planting is planned to increase. The production of grain crops will decrease, because less winter wheat is sown in autumn due to unfavorable weather factors. Corn sown areas have been reduced by 10-12% due to expensive logistics," said Taras Vysotskyi.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy said that the acreage under sugar beet will grow to 220,000 hectares against 180,000 hectares last season.

We will remind, as of March 24, agrarians of Vinnytsia, Volyn, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi and Cherkasy started sowing sugar beets.

The First Deputy Minister also noted that this year farmers faced a number of challenges, especially in the de-occupied territories. In particular, the reduction of cultivated areas, mined fields, financial problems, restrictions on sales markets and expensive logistics, because the aggressor country continues to block the full activity of Black Sea ports.

At the same time, according to him, the Government is doing everything possible to solve these problems. The program on the continuation of preferential lending for the agricultural sector has been approved, the headquarters for humanitarian demining is working, and the grain initiative has been extended. Alternative logistics have also significantly developed — additional road and railway checkpoints have been built.
